8 Signs of Hormone Imbalance in Women

Our endocrine systems — which manufacture our hormones — regulate a multitude of processes throughout our bodies, from our sleep patterns and moods to growth and metabolism performance.

Certain glands produce an array of hormones, and these include your pancreas, which produces insulin, your sex-hormone-producing ovaries, and your pituitary gland, a tiny powerhouse that controls other glands, including your ovaries and thyroid.

Because of the many functions your endocrine system controls, if something gets out of whack, you can experience a multitude of unpleasant symptoms. There are treatments that can make things right again though, so your body can return to a state of equilibrium.

The Gain Wellness Center team has much experience helping women address hormonal imbalances and the problems that accompany them, so don’t be discouraged if you’re experiencing perplexing and bothersome symptoms. Part of our complete wellness evaluation involves taking a detailed look at how your hormones are — or aren’t — functioning.

Dr. Mandeep Walia-Bhatia, Dr. Jeremy La Motte, and Dr. Joseph Coppolino offer advanced treatments for all sorts of hormonal imbalances. They’re dedicated not only to bringing you relief, but customizing your treatment so you can get back to living your life symptom-free again.

What hormonal imbalance symptoms should I know about?

Here’s a list we created of the most common signs that point to hormonal imbalance that you can easily reference.

  1. Mood swings are a hallmark of estrogen imbalance. Premenstrual syndrome, postpartum depression, and anxiety and depression are all linked to your estrogen production.
  2. Digestive problems are known to be linked to hormonal problems. Your gut contains a completely unique set of bacteria — known as your microbiome — that, when working well, is exquisitely balanced. When your hormones are thrown off, however, you notice everything from bloating to nausea and diarrhea.
  3. You feel chronically exhausted if your thyroid is sluggish, and if you’re like many other women, you’re expected to spin a lot of plates. This doesn’t mix well with fatigue!
  4. Speaking of being tired, sleep problems are another sign of hormonal instability. Estrogen and progesterone fluctuations inhibit your ability to get a good night’s sleep, whether you’re premenstrual, pregnant, menopausal, or experiencing variations unrelated to these factors.
  5. Fertility challenges are linked to uneven hormone production. Hormones control ovulation, and hormonal-related health conditions like diabetes, thyroid imbalance, and polycystic ovary syndrome all create barriers to pregnancy.
  6. Abnormal hormonal ups and downs are responsible for lowering your libido. Women make testosterone too, which fuels your sex drive, and if your estrogen production drops, you experience vaginal dryiness, which cramps your style even if you’re “in the mood.”
  7. Weight gain and appetite changes can be fueled by hormonal havoc. An underactive thyroid is the most obvious cause of unexpected weight gain, but estrogen’s decline during menopause is also a culprit, among other hormonal problems. Losing weight inexplicably is often hormonally driven as well.
  8. Persistent skin issues like adult acne are caused by too much of the hormone androgen. This hormone makes your oil glands go into overdrive, causing your pores to clog. Plummeting estrogen levels combined with more androgen combine to make menopausal women break out, too.

Remember that some hormonal changes are normal at different life stages, but others come out of the blue. Fortunately, both can be treated successfully by the pros at Gain Wellness Center, so your quality of life is restored.

We’re also familiar with treating a cluster of symptoms, including body aches and sleep problems, known as adrenal fatigue.

Can my hormonal imbalance be treated?

Absolutely, but since our practice’s philosophy is based on investigating the root cause of health problems, we first perform a complete physical exam and look at your medical history, lifestyle, and other factors, so we can start connecting the dots of your condition and examine them through a functional medicine lens.

We inquire about your diet, stress level, and whether you live with any chronic health conditions. We also discuss potential toxin exposure over the course of your life and assess your endocrine gland functioning, which is revealed through blood and saliva testing.

Armed with this data, we create your personalized treatment plan, which may include counseling you about dietary changes you can make, encouraging you to up your exercise level, and advising you about effective stress management strategies.

To address toxicity issues, we guide you through a unique cellular detoxification process that strengthens your gut, and we educate you about making your home toxin-free.

We may also prescribe hormone replacement therapy, in which artificial hormones fill the hormonal deficits you’re experiencing. These can be taken orally, via injection, or topically.
